JC is the Man
I caught Johnny Cash's new video for "Hurt" over the weekend. Directed by the ever impressive Mark Romanek. Talk about devastating. Watch it and try to be not to be heart-broken when it is over. In fact, see it here.
Proto-Seuss
Before Dr. Seuss was Dr. Seuss, he was just another guy working for the Man, waiting for his chance to slip away from the herd and track his own path. Theodore Geisel did a number of product advertisements in the 1920's and 1930's before finding fame as a children's book author. The Dr. Seuss Collection, housed at the Mandeville Special Collections Library at the University of California, San Diego, contains many examples of Dr. Seuss's advertising artwork and has kindly scanned a selection of these advertisements for our enjoyment. "Quick, Henry, the Flit!" will take you there.
Temptation via Island
The Internet tempts me again. Your own private island. Some are even rentals. Just in cause you want to be gone only temporarily.
Gerhard Richter
I've been out of town off and on for the last few weeks, doing and seeing things. I've come back from San Francisco with Gerhard Richter's art in my head.
The Grace of Moving Earth
I've been looking for some sense of grace these last few days and found it in this short documentary about Anne Troake, a choreographer who has composed a waltz for three construction excavators. Click here for the movie file (it is 9MB in size).
In the process of making sure I called the piece of equipment by its proper name, I discovered that John Deere has a build-your-own option for construction equipment. I got side-tracked for a little while building a custom Knuckleboom Loader until I realized that I really don't have any place to park it. Though, with its John Deere 6068T PowerTech engine, the 335 Knuckleboom Loader would probably make pretty short work of this mangy madrona which is hanging out on the edge of the property.
